Navigating Special Education
Dear Parents,
Our district has been selected to participate in a statewide survey being conducted by the New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. The survey is being sent to you as part of a statewide effort to collect information that will allow the New Jersey Department of Education to enhance special education programs, services and supports and to improve results for children and families.
During May of this year, you will be receiving a survey in the mail from the New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. When you receive the survey, we strongly encourage you to complete and return it as soon as possible in the pre-paid self-addressed envelope. The return envelope is addressed to a private agency that will scan and summarize the information on each survey. Your survey responses will remain confidential; you do not need to put your name or your child on the survey.
This survey will provide important information to further efforts on behalf of families and students with disabilities.
We thank you in advance for your support.
The Department of Special Services provides quality education services to students who are disabled and/or have special needs. Services are designed in the context of "least restrictive environment" and include a continuum of placement options such as regular class placements with support, resource centers, self-contained classrooms and specialized placements.
Specialized services and placements are available to students to meet their individual needs. Programs are assessed on an ongoing basis as needs change. The Bloomingdale School District currently offers a comprehensive array of services to students in need of special education and related services. Academic instruction is provided to special education students enrolled in district schools through supplementary aids and services within the regular education programs as well as resource programs and special class programs. In some cases, placement in out-of-district public or private programs is provided when such programming cannot be provided within the school district. Related services such as speech, counseling, adaptive physical education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy are also available.
The school district proactively seeks out community children between the ages of three and five who may have disabilities. Evaluation services and placement opportunities are available for eligible children.
A parent or guardian of a child in the district may request a referral to the child study team by contacting the building principal or writing to the Director of Special Services at the Office of Special Services.
